What is Fosfomycin?

Fosfomycin, an antibacterial, is used to fight infections. Fosfomycin can be used to treat bladder infections. Fosfomycin can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Fosfomycin

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat.

Fosfomycin can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Diarrhea, a condition that is watery, bloody, or both;
  • New or worsening symptoms of the bladder (burning, painful urine)

Some of the common side effects associated with fosfomycin include:

  • Nausea, upset stomach, stomach pain, diarrhea;
  • Headache, dizziness;
  • Weakness;
  • Rash;
  • A sore throat, a runny nose
  • Backache
  • Menstrual pain is characterized by vaginal itching and discharge.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to fosfomycin, do not use it. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing. Fosfomycin is not recommended for children younger than 12 years of age. Share fosfomycin only with those who have the same symptoms as you.

How to take Fosfomycin?

Read all instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow all directions. Follow the directions on the label. Fosfomycin usually comes in a single dose. You should not take more than one dose unless you are told to by your doctor. Take fosfomycin either with food or without. Fosfomycin comes as a powder that needs to be mixed with some water before use. Never take dry powder without water. Pour 3 to 4 ounces of water (1/2 cup) and dissolve the powder. Mix the powder and water together, then drink it all immediately. Pour to ensure you receive the full dose, and add some more water to the same glass. Swirl gently, and then drink immediately. Fosfomycin powder should not be mixed with hot water. You may need to wait 2 or 3 weeks before you feel better. If your symptoms don't improve after 3 days of treatment or if any new symptoms appear, call your doctor.

Your urine may be tested to determine if fosfomycin will work for your infection. This can be done before and after taking this medicine. Store away from moisture or heat at room temperature. Store the powder in its original packaging until you're ready to mix it.

Adult dose for cystitis:
Orally, 3 g (1 packet) as a single dosage
Comments:
This drug should not treat pyelonephritis or abscesses perinephric.
Use: To treat uncomplicated bladder infections (acute cystitis) in women caused by susceptible strains of Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis.
Adult dose for urinary tract infection:
Orally, 3 g (1 packet) as a single dosage
Comments:
This drug should not treat pyelonephritis or abscess perinephric.
Use: To treat uncomplicated urinary infections (acute cystitis) caused by susceptible strains Escherichia columbus and Enterococcus faecalis in women.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Fosfomycin does not require a daily dosage schedule and is only used in a single dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. Hearing problems and a change in taste are two symptoms of an overdose.

What should be avoided?

Antibiotics can cause diarrhea. If you experience diarrhea that is bloody or watery, tell your doctor.

Interaction with other drug

Inform your doctor of all other medications you are taking, including metoclopramide. Fosfomycin may interact with other drugs, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. This list does not include all possible drug-drug interactions.
