What is Formoterol inhalation?

Inhaling formoterol is used to treat the symptoms of COPD, including chronic lung disease and severe emphysema.This medication guide does not list all possible uses of formoterol.

Side effects of Formoterol inhalation

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat.

Formoterol can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Tremors, nervousness, chest pain, or fast or pounding heartbeats;
  • After using formoterol, you may experience wheezing or choking.
  • Symptoms of worsening respiratory problems
  • High sugar; increased thirst; increased urination; dry mouth; fruity breath smell;
  • Low sodium level: leg cramps, constipation, irregular heartbeats, numbness, tingling or fluttering, muscle weakness, or a limp feeling.

Formoterol side effects may include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
  • Nervousness, trouble sleeping;
  • Headache;
  • Dizziness;
  • Tremor;
  • Tiredness;
  • Muscle cramps
  • Dry mouth

Warnings

Formoterol should only be prescribed to people who have chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD). It is not for treating asthma. Formoterol does not work as a rescue medication. It won't work fast enough to stop a bronchospasm. If your breathing problems worsen quickly or you feel that your medication is not working, seek medical attention.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to formoterol, then it is best not to use it. Formoterol should only be prescribed to people with COPD. It is not meant for asthmatics.

Tell your doctor about any of the following issues:

  • High blood pressure, heart disease
  • A seizure;
  • Diabetes;
  • Liver disease
  • A thyroid disorder.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing. Anyone younger than 18 is not allowed to use formoterol.

How to take Formoterol inhalation ?

Read all instructions listed on your medication's label and follow its directions exactly.Follow the directions on your prescription label. Too much formoterol may cause dangerous side effects. Do not use formoterol to treat bronchospasm. Only use fast-acting inhalation medicines for an attack. If your breathing problems worsen quickly or you feel that your medication is not working, seek medical attention. The formoterol inhalation solution is only to be used with an air compressor and a standard jet machine. Formoterol should not be mixed with any other medicine in the nebulizer. Please read and follow all instructions for use that come with your medication. If you don't understand the instructions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Keep this medicine cool and away from heat, light, and other sources of heat.

Each vial should be kept in its foil pouch until the time comes to take the medicine. You must use your medicine immediately after opening a vial. The empty vial should be thrown away in a place where pets and children cannot reach it. Store unopened foil pouches at room temperature, but use them within three months. Use formoterol only if the liquid is clear and colorless. Use only after the date of expiration has passed. Stopping formoterol abruptly can make your condition worse. If you stop suddenly, your condition may worsen.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Do not take the missed dose. Use your next dose as usual. Do not take two doses in one go.

What happens if I overdose?

Call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical care. Formoterol can be deadly in an overdose. Overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, cramps in the muscles, and fainting.

What should be avoided?

Avoid using a second inhaled medicine that contains formoterol (such as Arformoterol, Indacaterol, Olodaterol, Salmeterol, or Vilanterol).

Interaction with other drug

Use formoterol only when you have a sudden bronchospasm attack. Short-acting bronchodilators should only be used for sudden bronchospasm attacks. Formoterol can be affected by other drugs, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.Inform your physician of all medications you are currently taking as well as those you are starting or stopping to use.
