Fareston

Drug class: selective estrogen receptor moderators, hormones/antineoplastics.
Generic name: Toremifene

What is Fareston?

Fareston can be prescribed to postmenopausal women suffering from metastatic breast cancer. Prior to prescribing it, however, your physician will conduct tests on your tumor before providing appropriate advice on its usage. Fareston can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effect of Fareston

If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing, hives or swelling to lips, face, tongue or throat - please seek medical assistance immediately!

Fareston may cause a serious heart rhythm disorder. If you experience this, stop using this medication and contact your doctor immediately.

  • Fast or pounding heartbeats

  • Fluttering in the chest

  • Dizziness that feels like you could pass out;

  • Shortness of breath

  • A seizure.

Call your doctor immediately if you:

  • Pelvic pain and abnormal vaginal bleeding

  • A slow pulse (fainting, fainting), slow breathing, or even stopping breathing

  • Eye pain or seeing halos around lights could all indicate blurriness or tunnel vision issues, with blurriness occurring frequently or tunnel vision persisting over time.

  • Heart attack symptoms: chest discomfort or pressure; pain spreading into your jaw or shoulder; nausea; and sweating.

  • High calcium levels can cause confusion, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.

  • Liver problems: loss of appetite, pain in the upper right corner of the stomach, dark urine, clay-colored stools, and jaundice.

  • Signs of a blood clot include sudden numbness (especially on one side), severe headaches, slurred or shaky speech, difficulty with vision or balance, and chest pain.

Fareston's side effects may include:

  • Hot flashes, sweating

  • Nausea;

  • Vaginal discharge.

There may be other side effects.Call your physician immediately if experiencing side effects; alternatively, the FDA can be reached at 1-800-FDA-1088 if reporting side effects is necessary.

Warnings

Fareston should not be used if you are suffering from long-QT syndrome or have low potassium or magnesium levels in your blood. Fareston may cause a potentially life-threatening heart rhythm problem. If you experience symptoms such as fast or pounding pulses, fluttering of the chest, shortness of breath, or sudden dizziness, stop using this medication and contact your doctor immediately.

Before you take this drug

Fareston should not be used if:

  • Long QT syndrome;

  • Uncontrolled electrolyte balance (low potassium or magnesium levels in the blood)

Inform your physician of any of the following issues:

  • Hypercalcemia is the term used to describe high calcium levels in the blood.

  • Endometrial Hyperplasia

  • Long QT syndrome (in yourself or in a member of your family);

  • Liver disease

  • Bone tumor

  • A blood clot.

Fareston can increase your risk of developing a condition that could lead to cancer of the uterus. Speak to your doctor regarding your personal risk. Report any abnormal vaginal bleeding immediately. Fareston should only be used by women who are no longer able to get pregnant. Fareston may harm a developing baby.If you are pregnant, do not take this medication.Instead, use effective birth control methods if you have not reached menopause. Inform your doctor immediately if you suspect you are pregnant. Fareston may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control, such as birth-control pills, and other birth control methods, such as skin patches, vaginal rings, or injections. Use a barrier birth control method to prevent pregnancy when using this medication: condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, or contraceptive swabs. Fareston should not be used while breastfeeding.

How to take Fareston?

You may be asked to undergo a pelvic examination by your doctor in order to ensure that you are not suffering from any conditions that would make it impossible for you to use Fareston safely. Read all instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow all instructions on the label. Follow the directions on the label. Take your medicine every day at the same time, with or without eating. Medical tests will be required frequently. Store away from moisture, heat, and light at room temperature.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. Overdose symptoms include nausea, headaches, and dizziness.

What should be avoided?

Fareston may cause unwanted side effects if you consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice. While taking this medication, avoid grapefruit juice and other grapefruit-based products. Before taking over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Avoid taking herbal supplements that contain St. John's wort.

Interaction with other drug

It is sometimes not safe to take certain medications together. Some drugs may affect the blood levels of drugs that you are taking, which can increase side effects and make them less effective. Fareston may cause serious heart problems. You are at greater risk if you use other medications for heart problems, high blood pressure, HIV, mental illness, or cancer. Fareston can be affected by many drugs. Included are prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. This list does not include all possible interactions. Inform your doctor of all medications you are currently taking and those that you will stop or start using.
