What is Diphenhydramine and magnesium salicylate?

Diphenhydramine can be used to treat allergies and as a sleeping aid. Magnesium salicylate belongs to a class of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) called salicylates. A combination medicine of diphenhydramine and magnesium salicylate can be used to treat chronic back pain, which keeps you awake when you should normally sleep. This medication guide does not list all possible uses for diphenhydramine or magnesium salicylate.

Side effects of Diphenhydramine and magnesium salicylate

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, wheezing or difficulty breathing, feeling lightheaded, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat.

Diphenhydramine and magnesium salicylate can cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Severe sleepiness
  • Urination that is painful or difficult
  • Hearing Loss
  • Confusion;
  • Signs of stomach bleeding include feeling light-headed or nauseated, having stomach pain that persists, and having bloody or tarry stool.

Side effects of magnesium salicylate and diphenhydramine include:

  • Drowsiness;
  • Dry eyes and blurred vision
  • Dry mouth, nose, or throat
  • Reduced urination
  • Heartburn, nausea, vomiting, gas;
  • Constipation;
  • Feeling restless or excited, especially in children
  • After nighttime use, drowsiness during the day or a "hangover" sensation

Follow the instructions on this medication. Too much diphenhydramine may cause serious heart problems, seizures, or even death.Magnesium salicylate can cause fatal stomach or intestinal bleeding.Before giving this medicine to children younger than 12 years old, consult a physician. Never give this medicine if a child has a fever or flu symptoms.

Before you take this drug

If you have an allergy to aspirin or any other salicylate, then diphenhydramine should be avoided.This medicine should not be given to children or teens with flu symptoms or chickenpox. Salicylates may cause Reye’s syndrome in children. This is a potentially fatal condition.You may not be aware of the possibility that you will experience stomach or intestinal bleeding while taking magnesium salicylateThis holds especially true for older adults.

Have You Suffered From Any of These:

  • Bleeding problems
  • Heartburn or stomach bleeding
  • Urination or prostate problems
  • If you have asthma, COPD, a cough that is mucus-related, caused by smoking, or chronic lung disease, then this could be the cause.
  • High blood pressure, heart disease
  • Liver diseases or cirrhosis;
  • Kidney disease
  • Arthritis, gout;
  • Diabetes;
  • Glaucoma;
  • A thyroid disorder.

Consult your doctor before taking this medication if you're pregnant or nursing. This medicine should not be taken during the last twenty weeks of pregnancy. It may cause serious kidney issues in the unborn child or even bleeding during delivery.

How to take Diphenhydramine and magnesium salicylate?

As directed on the label or by your physician, observe any applicable instructions.Too much diphenhydramine may cause serious heart problems, seizures, or even death.Take this medication with a glass of water.If this medication gives your stomach any trouble, be sure to take it with food.This medicine should not be used to put a child to sleep.If your pain doesn't improve or gets worse within 10 days, stop taking the medicine. Inform your doctor if your fever lasts more than three days or if there is any swelling or redness.Tell your dentist or surgeon if you will need dental or surgical work. You may have to temporarily stop taking the medication.It can produce unusual results in certain medical tests. Tell your doctor that you use diphenhydramine and magnesium salicylate.Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.

Usual Adult Dose for Insomnia:
Diphenhydramine-magnesium salicylate 25 mg–580 mg oral tablet:
Orally, take two tablets at bedtime with a glass of water.
Adult dose for pain:
Diphenhydramine-magnesium salicylate 25 mg–580 mg oral tablet:
Orally, take two tablets at bedtime with a glass of water.
Usual pediatric dose for insomnia:
Diphenhydramine-magnesium salicylate 25 mg–580 mg oral tablet:
Twelve years and older: Take 2 tablets at bedtime, as required. Drink a glass of water.
The usual pediatric dose for pain:
Diphenhydramine-magnesium salicylate 25 mg–580 mg oral tablet:
Twelve years and older: Take 2 tablets at bedtime, as required. Drink a glass of water.

What happens if I miss the dose?

You may not have a schedule for diphenhydramine or magnesium salicylate, as they are used only when necessary. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip any missed dose. Never take two doses in one go.

What happens if I overdose?

Call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical care. A diphenhydramine overdose can be fatal. Overdose symptoms include confusion, severe sleepiness, ringing ears, dry mouth and eyes, dilated pupils, rapid heartbeats, tremors, agitation, or seizures.

What should be avoided?

Diphenhydramine or magnesium salicylate can affect your reactions. Avoid driving and other hazardous activities until you are familiar with how they will affect you. You may be unable to react properly. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are using any other medicines that contain diphenhydramine or similar ingredients to magnesium salicylate. (For example, aspirin and other salicylates.) Included are medicines used for pain, fevers, swellings, sleep, cold or allergy symptoms, and anti-itch creams. Too much diphenhydramine can lead to an overdose. Avoid alcohol. Avoid alcohol.

Interaction with other drug

Before taking this medication with other drugs that may cause drowsiness, consult your doctor or pharmacist (such as sleep medications, opioid medication, muscle relaxants, anxiety medicines, or seizure medicine).

If you are taking:

  • A blood thinner—warfarin, Coumadin, or Jantoven
  • Other NSAIDs are available, including aspirin (Advil), ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, and Indomethacin.
