What is Dextranomer and sodium hyaluronate?

Dextranomer and sodium hyaluronate are natural materials that have been formulated into gels similar to substances found in the body. The sodium hyaluronate and dextranomer work by thickening tissues in the anal canal. The Dextranomer implant and sodium hyaluronate are injected into the anal canals of adults to treat incontinence. This medication is typically prescribed after other medications and diet changes have failed. This medication guide does not list all possible uses for Dextranomer or sodium hyaluronate.

How to take Dextranomer and sodium hyaluronate?

In an outpatient clinic, a healthcare provider will administer dextranomer sodium hyaluronate. The dextranomer and sodium hyaluronate are injected into your anal tissues in a series of four injections. Before dextranomer or sodium hyalurate injections, you will receive an enema. The injections will be given to you while you are lying on your back. An anoscope is a small tube that will be gently inserted into your rectum. The doctor can then determine the best place to inject dextranomer or sodium hyaluronate. The injection will be done in a way that makes you feel comfortable. Inform your caregivers immediately if you experience severe pain while receiving the injections. After your injections, you will be able to get up. You should rest for 60 minutes before leaving the clinic. You will be checked by your caregivers for any immediate side effects that the injections could cause.

Avoid taking a bath in hot water or engaging in any physical activity for the first 24 hours following your injection. Use a stool softener after your treatment to make the first bowel movements more comfortable. You should not use the stool softener again unless you are told to by your doctor. Injections of sodium hyaluronate and Dextranomer can cause rectal infections or bleeding. If you experience severe rectal irritation, bleeding, or any signs of infection, such as pain, warmth, swelling, or itching, call your doctor. You will be prescribed anti-infective medication to prevent infection. Even if there are no symptoms, you should take the antibiotics for the prescribed time. You may still experience fecal incontinence if you continue to use Dextranomer or sodium hyaluronate. You may also need to wait 3 to 6 months before you feel the full effects. If your symptoms don't improve within a month, tell your doctor. It is possible that you will need more than one treatment using dextranomer or sodium hyaluronate. This medicine may not continue to work for more than 12 months.

What happens if I miss the dose?

The dextranomer is administered at once, so there is no daily schedule.

What happens if I overdose?

Overdoses are unlikely because dextranomer sodium hyaluronate is administered by a healthcare provider in a medical environment.

What should be avoided?

Avoid all strenuous activities for at least one week following your injections. This includes sexual activity, jogging, or horseback riding, as well as vigorous exercise. Avoid inserting anything in your rectum for at least one month following injection (such as suppositorys, enemas, or rectal temperature meters). After treatment with sodium hyaluronate and dextranomer, do not take anti-diarrhea medication for at least one week. Ask your doctor if you should take any medication for pain or swelling that may be caused by the injection procedure. Avoid nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin (Advil), ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib, diclofenac (Celebrex), indomethacin (Indomethacin), meloxicam (Meloxicam), and others.

Interaction with other drug

Other drugs that you may take orally or by injection will not affect the hyaluronate and dextranomer used in the aural canal. Many drugs interact with each other. Inform your healthcare provider about the medicines you take, including over-the-counter and prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
