Cefprozil (sef PROE-zil)
Brand name: Cifzil
Dosage Forms: Oral powder for reconstitution (125 mg/5 ml, 250 mg/5 ml), or oral tablet (250mg; 500mg)
Class of drugs: second-generation cephalosporins

What is Cefprozil?

Cefprozil, a cephalosporin (SEF is short for low spore in), is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Cefprozil can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Cefprozil

If you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing, face or throat swelling and severe reactions on the skin then please seek medical help immediately.(fever or sore throat with burning eyes, skin pain or blistering, or a red or purple rash), seek emergency medical attention.

Cefprozil may cause serious side effects. If you experience:

  • Severe stomach pain; bloody or watery diarrhoea (even months after the last dose);
  • Fever, chills, sore mouth, sore throat
  • If you notice pale or yellowing skin, dark urine, confusion, or weakness, then it is important to consult your doctor.
  • Easy bruising and unusual bleeding
  • A seizure;
  • Kidney problems include little or no urination and swelling of the feet or ankles. You may also feel tired or short of breath.

Some of the common side effects associated with cefprozil include:

  • Nausea, diarrhoea;
  • Vaginal itching or discharge
  • Diaper rash
  • Abnormal liver function tests

Before you take this drug

Cefprozil should not be taken if you have an allergy to cefprozil or any other cephalosporin (cefdinir, cefalexin, Keflex, Omnicef, and others).

Inform your doctor of any of the following issues:

  • An allergic reaction to any medication (especially penicillin);
  • Colitis is one example of an intestinal disorder.
  • Kidney disease is a serious condition.

Cefprozil may contain phenylalanine. Inform your doctor if phenylketonuria is present. Inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant or nursing. Some anti-biotics may make birth control pills ineffective. Ask your doctor if you can use a non-oral contraceptive. These include injections, patches, rings for vaginal use, diaphragms, cervical caps, and contraceptive sponges. Cefprozil should not be used by children younger than six months.

How to take cefprozil?

Read all instructions or guides that come with your medicine and follow all directions. Follow the directions on the label. Before measuring a dose, shake the liquid. Use either the dosing device provided, or an accurate dose-measuring tool (not a spoon). Cefprozil dosages are determined by weight for children. When giving this medicine, be sure to follow all instructions. Even if you begin feeling better quickly, continue taking this medication for its entire prescribed duration.You can get infections resistant to medications if you skip doses. Cefprozil does not treat a virus such as the flu or the common cold.

Cefprozil may affect certain medical tests. Inform any doctor that you see about your use of cefprozil. Cefprozil tablets should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture. Cefprozil liquid should be stored in the fridge. Do not freeze. Cefprozil liquid older than 14 days should be thrown away.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for bronchitis:

Take 500 mg every 12 hours for 10 days.

Adult dose for cystitis:

Take 500 mg every 24 hours, between 3 and 7 days.

Adult dose for otitis media:

Take 500 mg every 24 hours between 5 and 10 days.

Adult dose for pneumonia:

Patients: 500 mg every 12 hours, for 7–21 days, depending on the severity and nature of the pneumocolitis.

Adult dose for pyelonephritis:

Simple: Take 500 mg every 12 to 24 hours for 14 days.

Adult dose for sinusitis:

Take 250-500 mg every 12 hours orally for 10 days.

Adult dosage for skin or soft tissue infections:

For 10 days, take 250–500 mg orally once every 12 hours or 500 mg every 24 hours.

Usual Adult Dose for Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis:

Take 500 mg every 24 hours for 10 days.

Adult dose for upper respiratory tract infection:

Take 500 mg every 12–24 hours for 10–14 days.

Usual paediatric dose for otitis media:

Do not exceed 1 g/day.
Dose for adults aged 13 and older

The usual paediatric dose for sinusitis:

Do not exceed 1 gram per day. Children 2–12 years old: Orally, 7.5 to 15 mg/kg every 12 hours.
Dose for adults aged 13 and older

The usual paediatric dose for skin or soft tissue infections:

Do not exceed 1 gram per day. Children 2–12 years old: Orally, 20 mg/kg every 24 hours.
Dose for adults aged 13 and older

Usual Paediatric Dose for Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis:

Do not exceed 1 gram per day. Children 2–12 years old: Orally, 7.5 mg/kg every 12 hours.
Dose for adults aged 13 and older

What happens if I miss the dose?

If it is almost time for your next dose, do not take one you missed. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Contact 1-800-222-1222 immediately in case of poisoning and seek immediate medical care.

What should be avoided?

Antibiotics can cause diarrhea. This could be an indication of a new illness. Call your doctor if you have bloody or watery diarrhoea before taking anti-diarrhoea medication.

Interaction with other drug

Inform your doctor of all other medications you are currently taking, such as:

  • Probenecid;
  • Antibiotics such as amikacin (gentamicin), kanamycin (Streptomycin), or tobramycin
