What is Cayston inhalation?

Cayston is a powerful antibiotic that can be used to treat severe infections or even life-threatening infections caused by bacteria. Cayston inhalation can improve breathing symptoms for people with cystic fibrosis and lung infections caused by bacteria named pseudomonas aeruginosa. This medicine can be used by adults and children aged 7 or older with a forced expiratory volume of 1 second (fev1) that ranges between 25% and 70%.

Warnings

Tell your doctor before using cayston if you have an allergy to any antibiotics, including cephalosporins (ceftin cefzil keflex omnicef and others), penicillins (amoxil augmentin bactocill bicillin l-a dispermox dycill dynapen moxatag principen pc pen vk pen-v pfizerpen unasyn and others), or other antibiotics.

Cayston should be taken for the entire prescribed time. Before your infection has resolved completely, symptoms may manifest themselves. You may increase your chances of a second infection resistant to antibiotics if you skip doses. Aztreonam does not treat viral infections such as the flu or the common cold.

Cayston inhalation must only be used with an altera nebulizer. Use only the altera brand nebulizer with this medication. Cayston and other medications should not be mixed with the nebulizer. You may have to take other inhaled medicines in a specific order when using this inhalation if you also use another inhaler. You can ask your doctor about specific instructions on when to take your other medications in relation to your cayston doses.

Before you take this drug

Cayston should not be used if you have an allergy to aztreonam. Cayston is an antibiotic. If you have any allergies, please tell your doctor before using it.

  • Cephalosporins, such as cefdinir and cefprozil
  • Penicillins, such as ampicillin, dicloxacillin, oxacillin, bactocill bactocill), amoxicillin, dicloxacillin, oxacillin, penicillin, pc pen, pfizerpen, and others

Cayston is not recommended for children younger than seven years of age.

How to take Cayston inhalation?

Cayston should be taken exactly as prescribed by your physician. Read all the instructions on the prescription label. This medicine should only be used with a nebulizer of the altera brand. Cayston should not be mixed with other medications in the nebulizer.

Before pouring the medicine into the nebulizer, make sure you know how to mix the medicine properly with the liquid. Do not prepare your dose until you are ready for the nebulizer. If the medicine appears cloudy or contains particles, call your pharmacist. After one use, throw away the ampule or bottle of medicine, even if it still contains medicine. Cayston is typically given three times a day at intervals of four hours for 28 days. Be sure to heed your doctor's recommendations!

Cayston may require that you take a bronchodilator before every dose. Only use the bronchodilator that your doctor prescribed. Follow all instructions regarding the timing of doses with your cayston dosage.

If you are using a short-acting bronchodilator, such as levalbuterol or albuterol (combinvent, duoneb proair, proventil respimat ventolin xoponex), use the bronchodilator 15 minutes to 4 hours prior to taking cayston.

If you are using a long-acting bronchodilator, such as formoterol or salmeterol (advair, breo dulera foradil serevent symbicort), use the bronchodilator 30 minutes to 12 hours prior to using this inhalation. Use a medicine that helps clear mucus out of your lungs after you have used a bronchodilator, but before taking cayston.

Even if you feel better quickly, continue to use cayston throughout the 28-day course. If you skip doses, your infection could become resistant to the medication. Cayston does not treat viral infections, such as the flu or common cold.

Keep the medicine and the diluents in the fridge. Do not freeze. Use before the expiration dates printed on the label. Store the diluent and medicine at room temperature, away from heat and sunlight, for 28 days. Don't use the medicine after it has been stored at room temperature for longer than 28 days.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for cystic fibrosis:

Inhalation:
initial dose: 75mg via nebulizer, approximately 2 to 3 minutes each time. Doses should be administered four hours apart.administer the maintenance dose in cycles of 28 days on and 28 days off.

The usual paediatric dose for cystic fibrosis:

Cayston inhalation is administered in the following order for patients who are receiving multiple inhaled treatments: bronchodilator first, then mucolytics.

What happens if i miss the dose?

Do not take two doses at once. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once. If you forget to take a dose for the day, make sure that all your doses are taken at least four hours apart.

What happens if i overdose?

Side effects of Cayston inhalation

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat, seek emergency medical attention.

If you experience:

  • Bronchospasm: (cough, wheezing, chest pain, difficulty breathing)
  • Any new or worsening respiratory problems

Cayston may cause side effects such as:

  • Wheezing and chest discomfort
  • Stomach pain, vomiting;
  • Fever (more common among children);
  • Cough, sore neck, and stuffy nose.

Interaction with other drug

You may have to take other inhaled medicines in a specific order when using cayston. You can ask your doctor about specific instructions on when to take your other medications compared to the time you use cayston inhalation.

Other drugs may interact with aztreonam. Inform your physician of all medications taken, including prescription, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal remedies. Never start a new medicine without consulting your doctor.
