What is Cabergoline?
Cabergoline can be used to treat an imbalance of hormones in which the blood contains too much prolactin (also known as hyperprolactinemia). Cabergoline can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.
Side effects of Cabergoline
If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing, hives or swelling to your face, lips or throat - seek medical help immediately!
Cabergoline can cause serious side effects. If you experience:
- Shortness of breath (even when lying down);
- Chest pain, dry cough
- Feeling lightheaded as though they could faint.
- You may experience pain on your side or lower spine.
- There is little or no urine production.
- Swelling in the ankles or feet.
While taking cabergoline, you may experience increased sexual desire, urges to gamble, or other intense desires. If this happens, talk to your doctor.
Cabergoline can cause a variety of side effects.
- Nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain;
- Constipation;
- Feeling tired or weak
- Headache;
- Dizziness;
- Drowsiness.

Warnings
Cabergoline should not be used if you suffer from uncontrolled hypertension, heart valve disorders, or a condition known as fibrosis. This is a condition in which excess tissue grows around or inside internal organs. Cabergoline should not be used if you have an allergy to any ergot-containing medicine.
Before you take this drug
Cabergoline should not be used if:
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
- A heart valve disorder;
- A growth of extra tissue (fibrosis) in the lungs, around your stomach, or heart;
- An allergy to ergot medicines such as ergotamine or dihydroergotamine
Please inform your physician of any of the following issues:
- Liver disease
- Heart problems
- Hypertension during pregnancy, such as eclampsia or preeclampsia.
Cabergoline is not known to harm unborn babies. Inform your doctor immediately if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant. Cabergoline should not be used while breastfeeding.
How to take Cabergoline?
You will be tested by your doctor to ensure that you are not suffering from any conditions that would make it unsafe for you to use cabergoline. Read through all instructions or guides included with your medication and follow these directions exactly.Sometimes, your doctor will change the dose. You must take the medication exactly as prescribed. Cabergoline should be taken at least twice a week for six months. This medicine should not be taken every day unless prescribed by your doctor.You will need to test your blood regularly to determine the prolactin level. Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.
Details on dosage
Adult dose for hyperprolactinemia:
Initial dose: 0.25mg orally, twice weekly
Increase the dose by 0.25 mg every 2 weeks, but no more than 4 times a year.
Maximum dose: 1 mg twice a week.
Comments:
Patients should continue to receive the lowest dose possible that produces the maximum response.
After maintaining normal serum levels of prolactin for six months, the drug can be discontinued and serum levels monitored to determine if reinitiating treatment is required.
Use: To treat hyperprolactinemic disorders that are either idiopathic or caused by pituitary tumours.

If you miss a dosage, call your doctor to get instructions.
What happens if I overdose?
Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention. The symptoms of an overdose include a stuffy nose or hallucinations.
What should be avoided?
You may get dizzy if you stand up quickly from a seated or lying position.
Interaction with other drug
Cabergoline can make you more drowsy when combined with other drugs. Before taking an opioid, sleeping pill, muscle relaxer, or medicine to treat anxiety or seizures, consult your doctor. Inform your doctor of all the other medications you take, especially
- Metoclopramide
- Medicine to treat mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, or medication
