What is Xacduro?
Xacduro is a combination antibiotic injection containing sulbactam and durlobactam that may be used in adults to treat hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (HABP) or ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (VABP) caused by susceptible strains of the Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus complex.
Acinetobacter infections usually occur in healthcare settings, including hospitals. Those who are on ventilators, catheters, or in an ICU, or who have open surgical injuries, or those with extended stays, are more susceptible. Acinetobacter can be transmitted through direct contact with contaminated surfaces and equipment or from person to person. They cause over 8500 infections per year within the U.S. and over 700 deaths. In addition, the World Health Organization has declared Acinetobacter species to be at the top of the list of essential bacteria that pose the biggest danger to human health. Most Acinetobacter infections are caused by one of four species from the Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus complex and are typically resistant to antibiotics, including carbapenem, making them difficult to treat.
Warnings
Xacduro is not recommended in patients who have a hypersensitivity to sulbactam or other beta-lactam antibiotics, durlobactam, or any other component in the injector. If an allergic reaction develops, stop using Xacduro.Xacduro is associated with an elevated risk of developing Clostridiodes difficile-related diarrhea.
Do not use it for treating infections caused by pathogens other than Acinetobacter species.Children
The efficacy and safety of Xacduro among children less than 18 years of age have not been proven.Pregnancy
There is no data specific to using Xacduro while pregnant.LactationThere is no information regarding how much durlobactam can be found either in animal or human milk. Sulbactam is found in human milk at low levels. There is no research about the effect of Xacduro, sulbactam, or durlobactam on infants who are breastfed or on the production of milk.

How to take Xacduro
The drug is administered via intravenous injection over three hours for patients suffering from CL CR between 45 and 129 milliliters/min. It is typically given at least every six hours. The prepared solution must be consumed immediately or kept in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C (36°F and up to 46°F) and utilized within 24 hours. Recycle any portion that is not used within 24 hours.A dosage reduction is necessary in patients who have a CL C <45 mL/min, and an adjustment is needed for a CL CR >130 mL/min.
Side effects of Xacduro?
The most frequent adverse effects of Xacduro in clinical trials were abnormal liver function tests, diarrhea, anemia, and low potassium levels.
Interaction with other drugs
The concentrations in plasma of Xacduro could be enhanced if it is given in conjunction with other organic anion transporter (OAT1) inhibitors like:
- Cimetidine
- Diclofenac
The simultaneous administration of two medications is not recommended. Check the information on prescriptions for the complete list of interactions between drugs.
