What is Adakveo?

Adakveo is used to:

  • For people who are aged 16 and older and suffer from sickle cell disease.

  • To decrease the frequency of certain events (crises) to help reduce the frequency with which certain episodes (crises) occur.

It isn't known whether Adakveo is secure and effective for youngsters under 16 years old age.

Adakveo may cause serious side effects, including:
Reactions to infusion

. Infusion reactions can occur within the first 24 hours after getting an injection of Adakveo. Contact your healthcare professional immediately if you experience one of these signs or symptoms of an adverse reaction to an infusion:

  • Febrile

  • Chills or shaking

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Tiredness

  • Dizziness

  • Sweating

  • Hives

  • Itching

  • Wheezing or breath shortness.

Your doctor may be monitoring your health for symptoms and signs of an infusion reaction.

Inform your doctor that you're receiving Adakveo prior to having the blood test. Adakveo can affect a lab test to check your platelet counts.

Before You Take This Drug

Before receiving Adakveo, inform your doctor about your medical issues, including the following:

  • Are pregnant, planning to be pregnant, or plan to be pregnant. It's not clear whether Adakveo can affect your baby's development.

  • Are breastfeeding or planning to. It isn't known whether Adakveo is absorbed into milk. You and your healthcare professional must decide on the best method to feed your child while you are undergoing treatment.

Inform your doctor about every medicine you use and are taking, including prescription and over-the-counter supplements, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

How To Take Adakveo?

  • The healthcare professional will give you Adakveo, an infusion into your vein via the IV line that lasts for 30 minutes.

  • The first infusion and another infusion two weeks later Following that, you'll receive an infusion every four weeks.

  • Your doctor may recommend other medications for you to consider during treatment.

  • Don't stop taking this medication unless your doctor recommends it.

  • If you don't make an appointment to receive an infusion, contact your healthcare provider immediately to make a new appointment.
