Ridactate

Drug class: minerals, electrolytes.

Generic name: calcium lactate.

What is Ribactate?

Ridactate, a form of calcium, is used in the treatment or prevention of low blood calcium levels. Ridactate can also be used to treat conditions like osteoporosis or disorders of the paraathyroid gland. This medication guide does not list all possible uses of Ridactate.

Side effects of Ridactate

Symptoms of an allergic reaction that require medical assistance: difficulty breathing, hives or swelling on lips, face, tongue or throat.

Ridactate may cause serious side effects. Ridactate should be stopped immediately, and you should consult your doctor if:

  • Severe nausea, vomiting, or constipation; or
  • High blood calcium: confusion, fatigue, loss of appetite, or increased thirst

Before you take this drug

If you have had any of the following:

  • Kidney disease.
  • Heart problems
  • A lung disorder called sarcoidosis;
  • A pancreas disorder;
  • Reduced stomach acid
  • Malabsorption is a condition where your body has difficulty absorbing nutrients from food.

You may need a different dose during pregnancy or when nursing your baby.Do not administer this medicine to an infant without consulting a doctor.

How to take Ridactate?

Follow the instructions on the label or those prescribed by your doctor. Ridactate is most effective when taken with food. Every day, drink plenty of fluids. Medical tests may be required. Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture to protect its integrity.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Contact 1-800-222-1222 immediately in case of poisoning and seek immediate medical care. An overdose can cause nausea, vomiting, and a headache.

What should be avoided?

If your doctor prescribes any restrictions regarding food, beverage, or activity, follow their instructions.

Interaction with other drug

Ridactate may make it difficult for you to absorb certain medicines, including:

  • Anti-biotic
  • Calcium-containing supplements or medicines include:
  • Heart medication
  • A diuretic, or "water pill,"
  • Medicines to treat osteoporosis, such as Fosamax (also known as Boniva), Risedronate (also known by the brand name Zoledronic Acid), and other drugs
