What is Riastap?
Riastap, a synthetic version of a natural protein found in the body that helps blood clot, is used to treat a wide range of conditions.riastap can be used to treat bleeding in patients with congenital fibernogen deficiencies.riastap can be used in other ways than those listed in the medication guide.
Warnings
Riastap should not be used if you're allergic to fibrinogen or have had an allergic reaction in the past.You may need to adjust the dose or undergo special tests if you have certain medical conditions. Tell your doctor before using riastap if you've had a stroke or blood clot in the past.Self-injecting riastap is not recommended if you are not familiar with how to properly administer the injection, dispose of the needles, the IV tubing, and any other items that were used. Patient instructions are included with this medicine to ensure safe and effective usage. Please follow the instructions carefully. If you have questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.riastap, which is made of human plasma (a part of blood), may contain viruses or other infectious agents capable of causing disease. Donated human plasma has been screened, tested, and treated in order to reduce the possibility that it contains anything that can cause disease. However, it is possible for it to transmit disease. Speak to your doctor about this medication's risks and benefits.
Before you take this drug
Riastap should not be used if you're allergic to fibrinogen or have had an allergic reaction in the past.
Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that riastap will be safe for you:
- A history of strokes or blood clots.
Riastap is not known to harm unborn babies. If you plan to get pregnant or are already pregnant, tell your doctor.There is no way to know if fibrinogen can pass into breastmilk or harm a baby who is nursing. You should tell your doctor if you're breastfeeding a child.riastap (a plasma-based product) is made of human plasma, which can contain viruses and other infectious agents. Plasma donated is treated and tested to reduce the possibility of it being infected, but it is still possible that it can transmit disease. Speak to your doctor about any risks or benefits associated with using this medication.
How to take Riastap?
Riastap can be administered as an injection using a needle inserted into a vein. You will be tested by your doctor to ensure that you are not suffering from any conditions that would make it unsafe for you to use this medication.Do not alter the instructions on your prescription. Use this medication only as directed. Never exceed the suggested dose or use it for more than the prescribed duration.riastap can be injected through an IV into a vein. It is possible that you will be taught how to use the IV at home. You should not inject this medicine yourself if you don't know how to properly use the needles and dispose of IV tubing and other items.riastap comes as a powder that needs to be mixed with a liquid before use. You should know how to mix and store your injections if you use them at home.riastap should not be mixed with other medications or administered through the same IV.riastap contains no preservative. You must use the vial immediately after piercing the rubber cap with a needle.
Shaking the bottle can ruin the medication. Only prepare your dose when you're ready to inject. The mixture should either be clear or lightly colored. If the color of your medicine has changed or if it contains particles, do not use it. For new medication, call your pharmacist.If you store it at room temperature, the mixed medicine must be taken within 24 hours.This medicine comes in a single-use bottle (vial). Even if some medicine is left after injection, throw it away after use.Use a single disposable needle. Use syringes and needles only once. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of sharps in a container that is puncture-proof. This container should be kept out of the reach of pets and children.Inform your doctor of any weight changes. Riastap dosages are based on weight. Any changes in weight may impact the dose.Your doctor may want to conduct frequent tests to determine the length of treatment with riastap.The powder should be stored in the refrigerator or in an area that is dark and cool. Keep it away from the light. Do not let it freeze. After the expiration date, throw away any vials that are still unused.
Details on dosage
Usual Adult Dose for Congenital Fibrinogen Deficiency:
When fibrinogen levels are unknown, dosing is recommended.
Dose (mg/kg) = [Target Level (mg/dl), Measured Level (mg/dl),]/1.7 (mg/dl for every mg/kg of body weight).
When fibrinogen levels are unknown, dosing is recommended.
Dose = 70 mg/kg of body weight
The maximum injection rate is 5 ml/min.
What happens if I miss the dose?
As soon as possible, take any missed dose. However, if it is almost time for another scheduled dosage to come due, simply skip this missed one and continue as scheduled. You should not take extra medicine to compensate for a missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.
What should be avoided?
If your doctor prescribes any restrictions regarding food, beverage, or activity, follow their instructions.
Side effects of Riastap
If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic response to riastap, seek emergency medical attention: hives or rash, tightness in your chest, wheezing and difficulty breathing, feeling as if you may pass out, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, throat, or mouth.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, stop using riastap immediately and contact your doctor.
- Signs of stroke: sudden numbness, weakness, or headache (especially one side), slurred or distorted speech, or problems with vision, balance, or coordination;
- Signs of a blood clot in the lungs: chest pain, sudden cough, wheezing, and rapid breathing;
- Signs of a blood clot in the leg: pain, swelling, warmth, or redness on one or both legs
- Heart attack symptoms include chest pain, pressure, or pain that spreads to the jaw or shoulder.
Riastap may cause the following side effects:
- Fever

Interaction with other drug
Other drugs, such as prescription and over-the-counter medicines, herbal products, vitamins, and herbal supplements, may also interact with fibrinogen. Inform your healthcare providers of all medications you are taking and those you plan to take.
