What is Lumoxiti?

Lumoxiti injections are used to treat hairy-cell leukaemia.Lumoxiti can be used to treat adult patients who have relapsed hairy-cell leukaemia.Lumoxiti can also be used when the patient does not respond to prior treatments and has had at least two other treatments, including a purine nucleoside analogue (PNA).Lumoxiti may be safe and effective for children, but this is unknown.

Warnings

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately: weakness, dizziness, and difficulty breathing.Lumoxiti may make you more susceptible to infection or worsen an existing infection. Contact with those who may be spreading infections (such as the flu, chickenpox, or measles) should be avoided. Consult your physician if you are unsure if an infection has been contracted or if there is a need for further information.Moxetumomab can cause kidney damage, especially in those with kidney disease and older adults. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience unusual bleeding or bruising, fatigue, confusion, irritability or tiredness, stomach pain, or nausea.

Before you take this drug

Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that Lumoxiti will be safe for you:

  • Kidney disease
  • A condition that affects the blood and blood vessels in your body (such as hemolytic uremic syndrome or severe microangiopathy).

Before starting the treatment, you may need to take a pregnancy test.Avoid using Lumoxiti while pregnant. This medicine could harm an unborn child. You should use effective birth control during the time you are taking this medication and for 30 days following your last dose. If you fall pregnant, tell your doctor immediately.Lumoxiti should not be used while breastfeeding.

What is Lumoxiti?

Lumoxiti can be infused into a vein. This injection will be given by a healthcare provider.The infusion may take up to 30 minutes.Other medications may be prescribed to prevent serious side effects, such as an infusion reaction. Continue to use these medications as prescribed by your doctor.Lumoxiti can be given as a 28-day cycle of treatment. The medicine may only be needed during the first two weeks of each treatment cycle. Up to six treatment cycles are possible. Your doctor will determine how long treatment should last.Drink up to 12 8-ounce glasses each of milk, water, or juice during the first eight days of a treatment cycle.

Details on dosage

Adult dose for hairy cell leukaemia:

The maximum number of cycles is six.
Concomitant treatment:
Hydrate with 1 L of isotonic solutions (e.g., 5% Dextrose Injection, 0.45% or 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection) 2 to 4 hours prior to and after every infusion. -Administer 0.5% to patients weighing less than 50 kg.
-Advise patients to drink up to 3 litres of fluids orally (e.g., water, milk, or juice) every 24 hours from Day 1 to 8 of a 28-day cycle. For patients weighing less than 50 kg, a maximum of 2 L is recommended per day.
Comments:
Premedicate for 30 to 60 minutes before each infusion. This includes an antihistamine, such as hydroxyzine, diphenhydramine, or ranitidine. Also, include acetaminophen and a histamine-2 antagonist, such as famotidine or cimetidine.
Consider oral antihistamines, antipyretics, and a corticosteroid (4 mg dexamethasone) to reduce nausea or vomiting. Maintain an adequate intake of oral fluids.
Monitor fluid balance and serum ions.
Consider using low-dose aspirin from Day 1 to 8 of every 28-day cycle.
Monitor for thrombosis.
Use: To treat adult patients with relapsed and refractory hairy cell leukaemia who have received at least two prior systemic treatments, including treatment with purine nucleoside analogue (PNA).

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are unable to attend your Lumoxiti appointment, call your doctor.

What happens if I overdose?

Overdoses are unlikely because this medicine is administered by a health professional in a medical environment.

What should be avoided?

If your doctor prescribes any restrictions regarding food, beverage, or activity, follow their instructions.

Side effects of Lumoxiti

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat, contact emergency medical assistance.Some side effects can occur during the injection. You should tell your carer if any of the following occur: nausea, dizziness, cold or heat, feeling light-headed or dizzy, a headache, muscle pains, coughing, difficulty breathing, or rapid heartbeatsLumoxiti may damage red blood cells, causing irreversible renal failure. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience: unusual bleeding or bruising; confusion, fatigue, or irritability; stomach pain or vomiting; dark urine; or fast heartbeats.

If you experience:

  • Anaemia (low red blood cells): pale skin; unusual fatigue; feeling lightheaded or hort of breath;, cold hands and/or feet
  • Signs and symptoms of electrolyte balance: muscle contractions or spasms, numbness, or tingling sensations; nausea; fast or irregular heartbeats; seizure.
  • Capillary leak syndrome: dizziness or weakness, coughing, difficulty breathing, sudden swelling, or weight gain.

In older adults, serious side effects are more likely to occur.

If you experience certain side effects, your cancer treatment may be halted or delayed.

Lumoxiti may cause side effects such as:

  • You may experience swelling in your legs, arms, or face.
  • Nausea, diarrhoea, constipation;
  • Headache, tiredness;
  • Fever

Interaction with other drug

Other drugs, such as vitamins and herbal remedies, may also interact with moxetumomab. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are taking and those that you stop or start using.
