What is Revatio?
Revatio relaxes the muscles in the blood vessels, increasing blood flow.Revatio can be used to improve the exercise capacity of men and women and treat hypertension and pulmonary arterial disease.Sildenafil, also known as Viagra, is used in the treatment of impotence (erectile dysfunction) in men.Do not take Revatio while taking Viagra unless you are told to by your doctor.
Warnings
Revatio should not be taken if you also use nitrate drugs for heart or chest problems. This includes nitroglycerin isosorbide, dinitrate mononitrate isosorbide, and recreational drugs like "poppers". Revatio can cause a serious drop in blood pressure when taken with a nitrate medication.Certain medicines may cause undesirable or dangerous side effects when combined with sildenafil. Inform your doctor of all the medicines you are taking, including Adempas (Rico Gout).If you experience sudden blindness, stop using Revatio immediately and seek emergency medical attention.
Before you take this drug
Revatio should not be used if you have an allergy to sildenafil or:
- If you are taking other medications to treat pulmonary arterial high blood pressure, such as Adepas (riociguat),
Sildenafil should not be taken if you also take nitrate drugs for heart or chest problems. It includes nitroglycerin and isosorbide mononitrate. Some recreational drugs, such as amyl or nitrite (poppers), also contain nitrates. Combining sildenafil and nitrate medicines can lead to a rapid drop in blood pressure.
Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure that Revatio will be safe for you:
- Heart problems (chest discomfort, a heart rhythm disorder, or a heart attack);
- High or low blood pressure
- Blood circulation problems
- Retinitis Pigmentosa
- Blindness of one or both eyes
- Bleeding problems
- A stomach ulcer
- Pulmonary veno occlusive disorder (PVOD) is a disease that causes pulmonary venous obstruction.
- Liver or kidney disease
- A blood cell disorder, such as sickle cell anemia or myeloma multiple,
- A physical deformity (such as Peyronie’s disease);
- If you've been told that you shouldn't have sexual relations for health reasons,
Sildenafil may cause sudden vision loss by decreasing blood flow to the eye's optic nerve. Sildenafil has caused sudden vision loss in a few people. Most of these patients had other health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or pre-existing eye conditions. This medicine may be the cause of some vision problems.Inform your doctor that you are expecting. Sildenafil is not known to harm an unborn child. Pulmonary artery hypertension (PAH) in pregnancy can cause serious complications, such as stroke or heart failure. Revatio is a drug that can treat PAH. However, the risks for the baby may be outweighed by its benefits.Breastfeeding may not be possible while taking this medication. You should consult your doctor if you are concerned about any risks.This medication should not be given to anyone younger than 18 without consulting a doctor.
How to take Revatio?
Revatio should be taken exactly as prescribed. Read all the instructions listed on your prescription label carefully.Revatio can be taken up to three times per day, approximately 4 to 6 hours apart.Before measuring a dose, shake the orally suspended liquid. Use either the provided dosing device or another dose-measuring tool (not spoon).If you feel dizzy, nauseated, or experience pain, numbness, or tingling during sexual activity in your chest, neck, arms, or jaw, call your doctor immediately. Revatio could have a serious side effect.Store away from heat and moisture at room temperature.
Details on dosage
Adult dose for pulmonary hypertension:
Revatio:
Oral:
Initial dose: 5 mg or 20mg orally, three times per day at intervals of 4 to 6 hours.
Maximum dosage: 20 mg three times per day orally.
Injection:
Initial dose: 2.5 mg or 10mg IV bolus, three times per day.
Comments:
No greater efficacy has been achieved by using oral doses above the maximum recommended dosage.
A 10 mg dose of injection is expected to have a pharmacological equivalent to a 20 mg dose.

What happens if I miss the dose?
You are unlikely to miss a Viagra dose since it is taken as needed.You should take your missed dose as soon as possible, but skip it if you are about to take the next dose. Never take two doses in one go.
What happens if I overdose?
Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.
What should be avoided?
Revatio and alcohol can have side effects.Grapefruit can interact with sildenafil, causing unwanted side effects. Avoid grapefruit products.Do not use any other medications to treat impotence, such as alprostadil and yohimbine, without first consulting your doctor.
Side effects of Revatio
If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your lips, face, tongue, or throat, please seek emergency medical attention.
If you experience this, stop taking Revatio immediately and seek emergency medical attention.
- Heart attack symptoms: chest pain, pressure or pain that spreads to your shoulder or jaw, nausea, and sweating.
- Vision changes or sudden vision loss;
- If the erection lasts more than 4 hours or is painful, it can cause damage to the penis.
If you experience:
- Coughing up foamy mucus with severe shortness of breath;
- Ringing in the ears or sudden loss of hearing
- Irregular heartbeat
- You may experience swelling of your ankles, feet, or hands.
- A seizure; or (convulsions);
- An uncomfortable sensation of lightheadedness. Feeling as though they could pass out.
Revatio may cause side effects such as:
- Flushing (warmth, redness, or tingling feeling);
- Headache, dizziness;
- Anomalies of vision (blurred or altered color vision, blurred vision)
- Runny or stuffy nasal discharge;
- Sleep problems (insomnia);
- Back or muscle pain
- Upset stomach.

Interaction with other drug
Revatio should not be taken with other similar medications, such as Cialis (tadalafil), Stendra (avanafil), or Levitra (vardenafil). Inform your doctor of all the medications that you are taking.
Tell your doctor all of your other medications, including:
- Drugs to treat high blood pressure or prostate disorders;
- Antifungal medicine: ketoconazole or itraconazole;
- Medicine for HIV/AIDS—ritonavir, and others.
