Lopid

Generic name: gemfibrozil [jem-FYE-broe-zil]
Drug class: fibric acid derivatives

What is Lopid?

Lopid reduces cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. These types of fats are linked to an increased risk of atherosclerosis.Lopid can be used in conjunction with a diet to treat very high cholesterol and triglyceride levels in people with pancreatitis.Lopid can also be used to reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes in people with high triglycerides and cholesterol who haven't been helped by any other treatment.This medication guide does not list all possible uses of Lopid.

Side effects Lopid

Seek immediate medical care if you have any of these symptoms: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling in your face, lips, throat, or tongue.In rare cases, lupus may cause a condition resulting in skeletal muscle breakdown, which can lead to renal failure. If you experience unexplained muscular pain or tenderness, call your doctor immediately, especially if there is also a fever, dark urine, or unusual tiredness.

Call your doctor immediately if you:

  • Sharp pain in the upper abdomen (especially after eating);
  • Jaundice
  • Pain or burning after urinating;
  • Blurred vision, eye discomfort, or seeing halos around lights
  • Low blood cell counts: pale skin, easy bleeding, unusual fatigue, feeling lightheaded or short-of-breath, cold hands and/or feet

Lopid can cause the following side effects:

  • Stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhoea;
  • Feeling of tingling or numbness;
  • Dizziness, drowsiness;
  • Blurred vision
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Impotence.

Warnings

You should avoid taking Lopid if your liver or kidneys are severely damaged, if you suffer from gallbladder diseases, or if you are also taking Repaglinide, Dasabuvir, or Simvastatin.

Before you take this drug

Lopid should not be used if:

  • Severe liver disease
  • Severe kidney disease
  • Gallbladder disease
  • If you also take repaglinide or dasabuvir,

Tell your doctor about any of the following:

  • Gallstones
  • If you are also taking warfarin( Coumadin or Jantoven),

Lopid is not known to harm unborn babies.Tell your doctor immediately if you plan to get pregnant.Breastfeeding may not be possible while taking this medication. You should consult your doctor if you are concerned about any risks.

How to take Lopid?

Read all instructions or guides that come with your medication and follow all directions. Follow the directions on the label.Lopid should be taken 30 minutes prior to breakfast and dinner. Don't forget to listen to your doctor.Lopid may be part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes diet, exercise, and weight management. Be sure to follow your diet, medications, and exercise regimens closely.You may require frequent medical tests. Tests can be used to determine the effectiveness of a medicine, even if there are no symptoms.Keep away from heat and moisture. Store at room temperature.

What happens if I miss the dose?

If you are almost due for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses of the same medicine at once.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 for poison help or seek immediate medical attention.

What should be avoided?

If you want to get the best results from Lopid, avoid foods that are high in cholesterol or fat.Avoid alcohol. Alcohol can interfere with your treatment.

Interaction with other drug

Certain medicines can increase the risk of serious muscle problems when taken with Lopid. Tell your doctor about any medicines you are taking or those you stop taking.

  • Colchicine
  • A "statin" cholesterol-lowering medicine—atorvastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, pitavastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin, simvastatin, Crestor, Lipitor, Zocor, Vytorin, and others.
