Coal tar produced during processing can be used for treating symptoms associated with psoriasis such as dryness, rashes, flaking and scaling. DHS Tar Shampoo utilizes this form of coal tar in its treatment regimens for these disorders. The use of coal tar will not cure psoriasis and will only provide temporary relief. This medication guide does not list all possible uses of coal tar.

Other emulsifiers may be present in coal tar. You should always check the labels of the coal tar products you use.Those with allergies to one or more ingredients found in coal tar should consult their physician prior to using it.Consult your doctor if you're pregnant or breastfeeding before taking this medication. You should not let a child under the age of 12 use this medication without an adult's supervision.
How to take DHS Tar Shampoo?
Do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration. Use the recommended dose and do not exceed it. Follow the instructions on the label to apply coal tar lotion, cream, ointment, or solution. Coal tar creams, lotions, and ointments can be used up to four times per day. Pour 1 to 3 cups of coal tar oil into the warm water before you bathe.Avoid becoming slippery by shaking out your shampoo before use to create enough lather for thick lathering, massaging it through and then rinsing thoroughly after massaging it in. Reapply it again five minutes later before washing out again for rinse off and massaging out again for 5 more minutes of treatment time before massaging out & rinse thoroughly again after massaging in. After rinsing, rinse thoroughly. The shampoo can discolor blonde or colored hair. This is a temporary effect. Use coal tar sparingly on large areas of skin. Avoid using coal tar for long periods without consulting your doctor.
Some types of coal tar may stain fabrics or other surfaces. If your symptoms don't improve or worsen while you are using DHS Tar shampoo, call your doctor. Keep the medicine at a temperature that is not too hot or humid. When not in use, keep the medication tightly sealed.
What happens if I miss the dose?
DHS Tar Shampoo is applied as needed and may not have a schedule. Use the missed dose immediately if you're on a dosing schedule. If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose. You should not take extra medication to compensate for a missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Overdoses of DHS Tar shampoo are not considered dangerous. If anyone accidentally swallows the medicine, seek emergency medical care or contact the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222.
What should be avoided?
You should not combine coal tar with any other medications for psoriasis unless you have been told to by your doctor. Do not get DHS Tar shampoo in your eyes. Rinse your eyes with water if this happens. Avoid using coal tar on the skin in your groin area or rectal region. Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds. The coal tar in your body can increase the sensitivity of the skin to UV rays and sunburn.
Interaction with other drug
The application of coal tar topically is unlikely to be affected by other drugs that you may take orally or even inject. Many drugs interact. Inform healthcare providers of all of your medications, both prescribed and over-the-counter.
