What is Relief-PE?
Acetaminophen is used to reduce fever and relieve pain.Chlorpheniramine reduces the effects that histamine has on the body. Histamine may cause symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and watery eyes.Phenylephrine shrinks the blood vessels of the nasal passages.Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion.Relief-PE, also known as a combination medication, is used to treat headaches and other symptoms such as fever, body pains, runny or stuffy nasal passages, itchiness, watery eyelids, and sinus congestion due to allergies, the cold, or the flu.This medication guide does not list all possible uses for Relief-PE.
Side effects of Relief-PE
Seek immediate medical care if you have any of these symptoms: difficulty breathing, swelling in your face, lips, throat, or tongue.Acetaminophen can cause severe skin reactions that are fatal. This may happen even if you've taken it before and never had a reaction.If you notice skin redness or blistering call your doctor right away.
This medicine can cause serious side effects. If you experience:
- Chest pain, rapid pulse, or fast heart rate
- Confusion, hallucinations, and severe nervousness are symptoms of confusion.
- Tremor, seizure (convulsions);
- Easy bruising, bleeding, or unusual weakness
- Little or no urinating is acceptable.
- Nausea is a feeling of pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen, along with itching and a loss of appetite. Other symptoms include dark urine or clay-colored stools. Jaundice is a yellowing of your skin, eyes, or other body parts.
- High blood pressure is dangerous (headache, anxiety, blurred vision and buzzing in the ears, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, seizures, shortness of breath).
In older adults, side effects like constipation and confusion are more common.
Some of the common side effects that Relief-PE can cause include:
- Dizziness, drowsiness;
- Blurred vision and mild headaches;
- Dry mouth, nose, or throat
- Constipation;
- Feeling nervous or jittery?
- Sleep problems (insomnia);

Warnings
If you've taken an MAO-inhibitor in the last 14 days (such as isocarboxazid or linezolid), phenelzine rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine, do not take this medication.Don't take more than recommended. An acetaminophen overdose can cause liver damage or death.Acetaminophen can cause severe skin reactions in rare cases. If you notice skin redness, a rash, or blistering, call your doctor immediately.
Before you take this drug
This medication should not be used if you have an allergy to acetaminophen or chlorpheniramine.You should not take this medication if you've taken an MAO inhibitor in the last 14 days. Drug interactions can occur. MAO inhibitors are isocarboxazid (linezolid), phenelzine (rasagiline), selegiline (tranylcypromine), and rasagiline.
Ask your pharmacist or doctor if you are concerned about any medical condition or concern.
- Asthma, or COPD, is coughing with mucus or cough caused by smoking or chronic bronchitis.
- A blockage of the intestines or stomach;
- Liver diseases or alcoholism if you consume more than three alcoholic drinks per day.
- Kidney disease
- Heart disease or coronary heart disease.
- Urination or prostate problems;
- Glaucoma;
- Diabetes;
- Overactive thyroid
- Pheochromocytoma
- If you are taking potassium (Cytra Epiklor K-Lyte K-Phos Kaon Klor Con Polycitra Urocit K),
It is unknown whether Relief-PE can harm an unborn child.Do not use this medication if you are pregnant without first consulting your physician.This medication can pass into breast milk and harm a nursing infant. Antihistamines and decongestants can also reduce breast milk production. Do not use this medication without consulting your doctor if you're breastfeeding a child.
How to take Relief-PE?
Do not exceed the recommended dosage or duration. Use only the recommended dose. Do not exceed it. This medicine should only be taken for a few days until the symptoms have cleared up.Don't take more than recommended. Acetaminophen overdoses can cause liver damage or death.Do not use a regular spoon to measure liquid medicines. Use a dose-measuring cup or spoon. Ask your pharmacist if you don't have a dose-measuring device.Drop the effervescent tablet into a glass full of water (at least 4 ounces or half a cup). This mixture should be stirred and consumed immediately.This medication should not be given to children younger than four years of age. Ask a doctor first before giving cough or cold medication to your child. Children as young as 4 years old can die from the misuse of cough or cold medications.Do not take the medication for more than seven days at a time.Tell your doctor or surgeon, if you've taken this medication within the last few days, if you are going to need medical testing or surgery.Store away from moisture or heat at room temperature. Liquid medicines should not be allowed to freeze.
What happens if I miss the dose?
You may not have a regular schedule of dosages, as Relief-PE can be taken whenever needed. Take the missed dose immediately if you take the medication regularly. If your next scheduled dosage is near, skip the missed dose. You should not take more medicine to compensate for a missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222 or seek emergency medical care. Acetaminophen overdoses can be deadly.Loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, sweating, and confusion or weakness are the first signs. Other symptoms include dark urine and yellowing skin or whites of the eyes.
What should be avoided?
Before using any other pain reliever, allergy medicine, or sleep medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Many combination medications contain acetaminophen, also known as APAP. Taking some products together may cause an overdose of acetaminophen, which could be fatal.Avoid alcohol. Alcohol can cause liver damage and increase the side effects of chlorpheniramine.This medicine can cause blurred or impaired vision or affect your thinking and reactions. You should be careful when driving or doing anything else that requires you to be alert and to be able to clearly see.
Interaction with other drug
Before using Relief-PE, ask your doctor or pharmacist if you also use any other medications, such as vitamins and herbal remedies. When used together, some medicines can have unwanted or harmful effects. Consult your doctor before using Relief-PE in conjunction with sleeping pills, narcotics, muscle relaxers, or medicine for anxiety, depression, or seizures.
