What is Hyper-sal?

Hyper-Sal is the chemical name of salt. This medication can reduce certain types of bacteria found in body secretions, such as saliva.Hyper-Sal can be used to make sputum from the mouth, which is mucus or phlegm, to improve lung function for people with cystic fibrosis, or to collect sputum to use in medical tests. This medication can also be used to dilute medications that are inhaled via a nebulizer.Hyper-Sal can be used in other ways not mentioned in this guide.

Side effects of Hyper-Sal

If you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, and/or throat.

If you:

  • Chest pain and difficulty breathing
  • A feeling of lightheadedness, as if you could pass out.
  • You may experience swelling in your hands or feet.
  • Muscle twitching.
  • Leg discomfort, muscle weakness, or a limp feeling

You may also experience a slight irritation or burning in your mouth or a taste of salt.There may be other side effects. For medical advice on side effects, call your doctor. Contact the FDA by dialing 1-800-FDA-1088 in order to report adverse side effects.

Warnings

Tell your doctor all of your allergies and medical conditions before using Hyper-Sal. Tell your doctor if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. You may be unable to take this medication in some cases or may need to adjust the dose or take extra precautions.Inform your doctor if you are taking any other medications. This includes potassium supplements, diuretics (diuretics), steroids, blood pressure medication, or medications containing sodium.Tell your caregiver immediately if you experience chest pain, difficulty breathing, swelling of your hands or your feet, fatigue, muscle twitching or confusion, an uneven heartbeat, extreme thirst, increased urination or decreased urination, or leg discomfort.

Before you take this drug

If you've ever experienced an allergic reaction to hypersal, then this medication is not for you.

Tell your doctor about any of the following to ensure Hyper-Sal will be safe for you:

  • Asthma;
  • Heart disease, or high blood pressure.
  • Epilepsy;
  • Kidney or a liver disease
  • Migraine headaches
  • Any type of swelling
  • If you've recently had surgery,
  • If you're on a diet low in salt,

FDA pregnancy class C There is no information on whether hypersal can harm an unborn child. If you plan to get pregnant or are pregnant, tell your doctor.It is unknown if sodium chloride can pass into breast milk or if it will harm a baby who is nursing. You should tell your doctor if you're breastfeeding a child.

How to take Hyper-Sal?

Do not alter the instructions on your prescription. Use this medication only as directed. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or use it for longer than suggested.Hyper-Sal can be administered using a nebulizer. The medication is inhaled through a mouthpiece, face mask, or any other device attached to the nebulizer.You can learn how to use the nebulizer from your doctor, nurse, or other healthcare provider.Hyper-Sal liquid is a liquid that is added to the medication chamber in the nebulizer. The drug chamber is connected to an air compressor and a mouthpiece or mask.You may also be prescribed another inhaled medicine to prevent bronchospasms (muscle contractions in the airways). Your doctor may ask you to rinse your mouth or wipe your insides with tissue. For best results, follow your doctor's instructions.Most of the time, you'll use this medication in a comfortable upright position. While using the mouthpiece or mask, breathe slowly and evenly. Wearing a nose clip will also close your nasal passages, allowing you to only breathe through your mouth.

You will need to spit every 5 minutes if you're using this medication for a sputum sample. Your healthcare provider may also direct you. To produce the best specimen, cough from your chest.Continue to breathe through the nebulizer as long as your doctor has instructed you. After you've completed inhaling for the prescribed time, dispose of any liquid left in the medicine chamber. Your best option would be not to store anything for future use.Hyper-Sal should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture or heat.

What happens if I miss the dose?

Hyper-Sal may be used as needed, and you might not have a regular schedule of dosage. Use the missed dose immediately if you use the medication regularly. If your next scheduled dosage is near, skip the missed dose. You should not take extra medicine to compensate for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Call 1-800-222-1222 immediately if you suspect an overdose and require poison help or seek immediate medical assistance.

What should be avoided?

If your doctor prescribes any restrictions regarding food, beverage, or activity, follow their instructions.

Interaction with other drug

Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medications or if you will stop using them during treatment with Hypersal.

  • Potassium supplements;
  • A diuretic, or "water pill".
  • Steroid, such as prednisone, fluticasone, mometasone, dexamethasone, and others.
  • Blood pressure medication
  • Alka-seltzer, zegrid, or omeprazole (omeprazole sodium bicarbonate) are sodium-containing medications.
