What is Cystagon?
Cystagon reduces cysteine levels (an amino acid) within the body. Cystagon is a medication used to treat the condition known as nephropathic cystinosis (NEF-roe-PATH-ik SIS-tin-OHsis), which is one of the rare genetic conditions that results in a buildup of cystine in the kidneys as well as other organs. Cystagon overdoses can lead to kidney failure or other medical issues.
Cystagon is a medication for both children and adults. Procysbi is not recommended for children younger than 1 year old. Cystagon can also be employed for other purposes that are not covered in this guideline.
Side effects of Cystagon
Seek medical attention immediately. If you notice symptoms warning signs of an allergic response (hives and breathing problems or swelling of your throat or face) or severe skin reactions (fever and throat soreness, burnt eyes, irritation, purple or red skin rash that blisters as well as peeling),
Contact your doctor immediately in the event that you suffer from any of the following side effects (some of these could be due to the cystinosis disorder, not caused by the hormone cystagon):
- Depression, depressed mood, severe sleepiness;
- A seizure;
- Abnormal bruising or streaks of blood on the skin.
- Bone pain, joint movements;
- An electrolyte imbalance causes increased thirst, the need to urinate, and confusion. Constipation, leg cramps, abnormal heartbeats, or tingly feelings;
- An increase in pressure inside the skull causing severe headaches, ringing in the ears, dizziness, vision problems, or headaches behind your eyes,
- Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and coughing up blood. Vomiting that looks like coffee grounds.
Common adverse effects of cystagon could include:
- Tiredness, drowsiness;
- Nausea, stomach pains vomiting, loss of appetite nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea;
- An unusual breath odor or skin odor
- Rash;
- Fever or
- Headache.

Warnings
Follow the directions on the label of your medication and on the label of your package. Be sure to inform your health care providers about your allergies, medical conditions, and any medications you take.
Prior to use this drug
It is recommended not to use Cystagon in the event that you have an allergy to Cystagon and the penicillamine.
Inform your doctor if you were ever diagnosed with:
- Any kind of skin rash
- Bone-related problems (including fractures);
- Epilepsy or another seizure disorder
- The liver condition;
- Low white blood cell (WBC) count;
- Depression Drowsiness, depression, or nerve system disorder, as well as
- Stomach ulcer or bleeding within your stomach or intestines.
It is unclear if this medication will affect a newborn baby. Consult your physician if you are expecting or planning to be pregnant. You shouldn't use this medicine while breastfeeding.
How to take Cyclagon?
Follow the instructions on the prescription label and study all medication guides or instructions sheets. The doctor might alter your dosage. Make sure you take the medication exactly as prescribed. Suck the capsule in its entirety, but do not crush or chew it. If you are unable to swallow a capsule completely, follow the instructions of the patient to open the capsule and then mix it with specific foods. Your physician may suggest that you take Cystagon oral granules. Do not chew, crush, or chew on oral granules.
Procysbi is most effective when taken without food and at least 30 minutes prior to or 2 hours following eating. If you can't consume the medication without food, then eat a tiny quantity (1/2 cup) of food in the first hour prior to or one hour after you have taken the medication. If you are taking the medication without or with food, it should be taken in the same manner each time. Mix to mix oral granules or the medicine in capsules: Mix the oral granules or medicine from a capsule with food items.
- Take the insides of the capsule or the capsule that is open into 1 cup of berry jelly, applesauce, or water. You can also add the juice of the fruit (but do not mix it with the grapefruit juice).
- Take the mixture in a bowl without chewing, and consume the mixture within 30 minutes following mixing. Do not store it for use later.
- Avoid eating foods high in fat one hour prior to or one hour after taking Procysbi.
Procysbi also includes instructions for pouring the mixture into the Gastronomy Tube (14 French or larger). Cystagon dosages are based on weight (especially for adolescents and children). Your dose needs may change if you gain or lose weight.
You'll require regular medical tests. You shouldn't stop using Cystagon until you've received the advice of your physician. Stopping suddenly may cause your condition to get worse.
Cystinosis is usually treated using an array of medications that include vitamin and mineral supplements. Follow all medication as prescribed, and study all the drug guides you are given. Do not alter your dose or schedule of dosing without your physician's guidance. Keep at room temperature, free of heat, moisture, and light.
What happens if I overdose?
You should take the missed dose when you remember.
- For Cystagon Take a break from your missed dosage if the scheduled dose is due to be taken in less than two hours.
- For Procysbi If you're under 8 hours late for the dose, you should take the medication as quickly as you are able. Don't miss any missed doses if the coming dose falls within less than 4 hours.
What happens if I overdose?
Get medical attention in an emergency or contact the poison help line at 1-800-222-1222.
What should be avoided?
Avoid driving and other hazardous activities until you are aware of the effects of Cystagon on you. The way you react could be affected.
Beware of drinking alcohol when using Procysbi. Alcohol can make the medication less effective or result in adverse effects.
Interaction with other drugs
Consume Procysbi at least one hour prior to or one hour after taking any medication that has bicarbonate or carbonate.
Other medications can affect Cystagon, such as medications that are prescribed and available over the counter, vitamins, and herbal products. Inform your physician about all the medications you currently use as well as any medicines you are about to start or stop taking.
